December 2007 ~ Orphanage at Bvumbwe
This orphange is run by Ann Davidson there are 44 children here with an age range between 2 and 17 years of age. All are brought up in the African tradition where children of school age go to school and older children are sent to learn a trade. The orphanage grows all its own vegetables and all children help in the garden. Jennifer the housemother showed us around. She is quite obviously dedicated to her job and has the whole establishment running like clockwork. Most of the children were still at school but we did see the very young children. The whole place gives an impression of home; there is a bright sunny playroom with a small schoolroom where a teacher comes in every afternoon to supervise homework. The dormitories are bright and cheerful; a housemother sleeps in each of the girl's rooms and is mum to the children under her care. It certainly cannot be called an orphanage it's a home for 44 young people.
