If you have a look under the Acivities menu at the Nchima Trust Centre page of this website you will see that earlier this year we started farming a 3 hectare plot of land in Thyolo. The land was kindly leased free of charge to the Trust by the Nchima Tea Estate. We have employed a manager, Mr Somanje, to lead a team to clear, cultivate and plant up the land with vegetables initially and possibly other products once established. The Trust has two aims in supporting this project; firstly to achaive at least a breakeven position and ultimately profitability in order not to burden the charity and secondly to ensure that we can use the process as an educational activity for local people who are interested in sharing ideas about improvements in agricultural practices.
Anyway the good news is that Mr Somanje and his team delivered 75 kgs of first class cabbages to Thyolo Hospital last week - the well that was hand dug (see photos on the site - its is an impressive hole) is now full and hopefully by staggering planting crops should be available each month. This is provided of course that the availability of water is sufficient during the drier months.
I gather that some students from Chancellor College have encountered some difficulties recently - not quite sure what was actually going on but Frank mentioned that he had to run from the Police at some stage - perhaps someone could let us know what went on and hope that everyone is OK
